Arman Tsarukyan Says He’d Rather Drop to 145 Than Move Up to 170
Top Lightweight Reveals Surprising Preference in Latest MMA Hour Interview
In a new interview on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Arman Tsarukyan opened up about his weight class future and his comments raised eyebrows across the MMA community.
Despite being one of the top contenders at 155 pounds, Tsarukyan revealed he would rather drop to featherweight (145 lbs) than move up to welterweight (170 lbs), even after past weight-cutting issues.
His statement came in response to a question about long-term plans and how he sees his body developing as he continues to age in the sport.
Tsarukyan, who has previously struggled with the weight cut, stated bluntly:
“If I had to choose, I’d go down to 145. I don’t want to fight at 170.”

Weight Cuts and Dana White’s Past Remarks
Tsarukyan’s remarks come just months after he withdrew from a scheduled lightweight title bout due to a back injury sustained while cutting weight.
UFC President Dana White publicly reminded fans at the time that Tsarukyan had missed weight once before, and that any further missteps would jeopardize future opportunities.
Under current UFC regulations, fighters must meet their contracted weight at the official weigh-in the day before the fight or risk fines and fight cancellations.
Given the physical strain and risks involved, many expected Tsarukyan to consider moving up not down.

A Surprising Strategy Shift?
While some fans applauded his competitive spirit, others questioned whether a drop to 145 would be sustainable for Tsarukyan’s frame and style.
Known for his relentless wrestling and strong base, Tsarukyan has found great success at 155 and is currently ranked near the top of the lightweight division.
His comments could also reflect frustration at recent career setbacks.
After a string of wins, Tsarukyan was being groomed for a title shot before his withdrawal.
He’s since watched fighters like Ilia Topuria, now the UFC lightweight champion, seize opportunities and climb the rankings.

What’s Next for Tsarukyan?
Tsarukyan’s return to the Octagon is expected later this year, and several potential opponents are in the mix.
Names like Paddy Pimblett, Justin Gaethje, and Dan Hooker have all been floated as realistic options depending on timing and matchmaking direction.
A fight with Pimblett would bring added attention due to their recent media back-and-forth.
Gaethje, still regarded as one of the division’s most dangerous strikers, would be a tougher path back to contention.
Meanwhile, a clash with Hooker would serve as a compelling stylistic test and a fan-friendly matchup.
